Lake Como is famous for its beauty, but it is also famous for its crowds. Villa del Balbianello is usually a symphony of tourists, tour guides, and selfie sticks.
But not this time.
As a Lake Como proposal photographer, my job starts long before I pick up the camera. When this client approached me, he wanted perfection. He knew the Villa was the dream location, but he was worried about the noise and the onlookers.
I shared a piece of local knowledge that changes everything: You can rent the Villa exclusively after closing hours.
He took that advice and ran with it. He booked the venue for a private evening, ensuring that the most beautiful place in Europe belonged only to them.
6:00 PM. The Gates Close.
The sun was beginning its descent when their private boat pulled up to the landing. The gates were locked to the public. The garden was silent.
They began the walk up the winding paths toward the Loggia Durini – the famous three-arched structure at the summit. As they walked, the atmosphere shifted. She began to look around, confused. She realized the voices were gone. No tourists. No queues. Just the sound of gravel under their feet and the water below.
She didn’t yet realize that the silence was intentional – he had secured the entire villa just for them.
I was already in position, hidden behind one of the stone columns of the Loggia. This is the most crucial part of my job: being invisible so the moment remains theirs.
When they reached the center of the arches, he stopped. The silence was heavy and perfect. He dropped to one knee.
Because there were no onlookers, there was no pressure. Just a quiet question and an emotional “yes.” It wasn’t a performance for a crowd; it was a conversation between two people.

For grooms planning a proposal in Lake Como, my biggest piece of advice is to control the environment.
Because he secured the venue privately, the clock didn’t stop after she said “yes.”
We ended the evening back on the boat, circling the water in front of the Villa to capture the classic Lake Como postcard shot – but with a personal story attached to it.

Great photos require great planning. I am not a wedding planner, but having photographed countless love stories here, I know the rhythm of the lake. I support my clients with the insider knowledge, timeline planning, and location tips they need to pull off a proposal like this.
I shared the vision, and he made it a reality.
If you are looking for a proposal photographer in Lake Como who knows exactly how to get the best light, the best privacy, and the best shots, let’s talk.
To propose at Villa del Balbianello without tourists, you must book an “after-hours” exclusive rental. The villa is located in Lenno, and public access usually ends at 6:00 PM. By renting the venue privately for 1–2 hours in the evening, you gain exclusive access to the gardens and the famous Loggia Durini (the arched structure). This requires booking in advance (90 days) through the FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) or via a private arrangement.
Yes. Most historic villas, including Villa del Balbianello, Villa Melzi (Bellagio), and Villa Monastero (Varenna), require a commercial photography permit for professional shoots. This applies even if you have purchased an entry ticket. If you book me as your photographer, I can guide you on how to secure these permits so your proposal is not interrupted by security.
Standard Photo Permit (Public Hours): around 600 € if you are in casual clothes; around 800 € if you are in formal/wedding attire. This allows for a 2-hour shoot with your photographer.
Exclusive Private Rental: Starts at approximately 2.000 – 3.000 € for a 2-hour slot when the villa is closed. This grants you exclusive use of the Loggia Durini or gardens without tourists.
Lake Como weather can be unpredictable. If it rains, we have two luxury options:
Covered Architecture: Venues like the Loggia Durini at Villa del Balbianello offer a roof overhead while keeping the stunning lake background.
Luxury Interiors: We can pivot to the interiors of grand hotels like Grand Hotel Tremezzo or Villa d’Este, which offer elegant, dry backdrops. Insider Tip: Don’t fear the clouds. Overcast days often provide the softest, most cinematic lighting for portraits.
Absolutely. A private boat proposal is one of the most popular and intimate options. You can rent a classic Riva or a Venetian limousine boat. The captain can stop in the middle of the lake with Villa del Balbianello or the town of Bellagio in the background. As your photographer, I can join you on the boat to capture the moment without being intrusive.
TIt depends on the level of support you want. As an experienced photographer, I provide art direction and visual strategy: I know exactly when the light hits the villa perfectly, I can share contacts for trusted boat companies, and I share the knowledge I have gained from watching previous couples succeed.
However, the logistics in Lake Como can be complex. If you want a completely stress-free experience where every transfer, booking, and timeline detail is managed for you, I highly recommend hiring a planner. They handle the heavy lifting so you can concentrate entirely on the proposal and enjoy the moment. I handle the memories; they handle the execution.
Technically, there is a walking path (approx. 20-30 minutes from Lenno). However, do not do this for a proposal. The path is steep, gravelly, and ruins the “reveal.” For a luxury experience, you must arrive by private boat. It allows you to step off directly onto the private dock in front of the villa, ensuring your partner is relaxed, cool, and their shoes (and heels!) are in perfect condition for the photos.
Strictly speaking, no. Villa del Balbianello has a very strict “No Drone” policy within the garden grounds to protect the peace and the historic property. Security will intervene if you try.
For Her: Flowy fabrics (silk, chiffon) look incredible when they catch the lake breeze. Avoid tight, restrictive patterns. Block heels or elegant flats are smarter than stilettos due to the gravel paths.
For Him: You can never go wrong with a tailored suit or a crisp linen shirt and chinos.
The Vibe: Think “Italian Elegance.” Timeless, neutral tones (cream, beige, sage green, navy) always look better against the stone and water than neon colors or heavy logos.
You will be on a high after the “Yes,” so you need a place that matches the mood.
Nearby & Romantic: La Tirlindana in Sala Comacina is famous for its ravioli with lemon and lake views—very close to the villa.
Iconic Luxury: Grand Hotel Tremezzo (La Terrazza Gualtiero Marchesi) is a short boat ride away and offers the quintessential “Dolce Vita” experience.
Intimate: Al Veluu offers one of the best sunset views over the lake and feels very private.
Yes, absolutely. However, you cannot just walk in and pop the question if you want professional photos or privacy. You generally have three options:
During Opening Hours (Public): You can propose while the villa is open to the public (typically 10 AM – 6 PM), but you must buy a standard photography permit. Note: You will be surrounded by other tourists.
Private Rental (After Hours/Closed Days): For complete privacy, you can rent the garden or the famous Loggia Durini when the villa is closed to the public (usually Mondays, Wednesdays, or after 6 PM). This requires a significantly higher rental fee.
If Villa del Balbianello is out of budget or fully booked, many other villas offer proposal permits. Prices generally range from €300 to €1,500.
Villa Melzi (Bellagio): ~€350–€450 for a photography permit. This is a non-exclusive license (the park remains open to the public), but the gardens are vast enough to find a quiet spot.
Villa Monastero (Varenna): ~€300/hour for a garden photoshoot permit (shared public access). For exclusive use of a specific balcony or loggia, fees can jump to €1,000+ per hour.
Villa Cipressi (Varenna): Private terrace rentals for ceremonies or proposals often start around €1,500+ depending on the season and duration.
Beyond Villa del Balbianello, these locations offer stunning backdrops:
Villa Melzi Gardens (Bellagio): Famous for its Japanese pond, blooming azaleas (in spring), and white neoclassical architecture.
Varenna’s “Walk of Lovers” (Passeggiata degli Innamorati): A red-fenced suspended walkway over the water. It’s free but very crowded, so go at sunrise.
Villa Monastero (Varenna): Offers incredibly long scenic botanical gardens and beautiful stone pillars right on the water.
Nesso: Famous for its ancient stone bridge (Ponte della Civera) and waterfall. It looks best from a boat.
A Private Riva Boat: Renting a classic wooden boat for 1–2 hours provides the most iconic “Lake Como” photos with the mountains and villas in the background.
